This article is intended to restore the EndNote™ tools on Windows-based systems. If you’ve never seen the EndNote tools loaded in Word, please see the Article with installation steps for your version of EndNote and Word.
Word 2007/2010/2013/2016/2019 (Win):
- Word 2007: Click on the Office icon and select "Word Options."
Word 2010/2013/2016/2019: Click on the File ribbon and select "Options." - Click on "Add-ins."
- Change the "Manage" options to "Disabled Items."
- Click Go.
- Highlight any EndNote item(s) and click "Enable."
- Click OK.
Word 2000/2002/2003 (Win):
- Click the "Help menu" and select "About Microsoft Office Word."
- Click "Disabled Items."
- Highlight any EndNote item(s) and click "Enable."
- Click Close.
- Click OK.
If prompted, select to allow the file(s) to be loaded by Word. Close and re-open Word when this is done.
Note: With Word 2010/2013/2016/2019, the Ribbon tab may also be unchecked. Click on the File menu and select Options. Click on Customize Ribbon and Check EndNote if it is unchecked. Click OK to display the EndNote tab in the Word Ribbon.
If that fails, please follow the steps below to enable EndNote tools in COM Add-Ins:
Word 2007/2010/2013/2016/2019 (Win):
- Word 2007: Click on the Office icon and select "Word Options."
Word 2010/2013/2016/2019: Click on the File ribbon and select "Options." - Open Word and click on the File ribbon and select "Options."
- Click on "Add-ins."
- At the bottom of the page, next to "Manage:" set the Drop down to "COM Add-ins"
- Click Go.
- Select EndNote Cite While You Write (If it is unchecked).
- Click OK.
Word 2000/2002/2003 (Win):
- Click the "Help menu" and select "About Microsoft Office Word."
- Click "COM Add-ins."
- Select EndNote Cite While You Write (If it is unchecked).
- Click Close.
- Click OK.
If the option to "Disable all Application Add-ins" is checked in Word 2007/2010/2013/2016/2019, that can also cause the tools to not appear. To turn off this setting, do the following:
- Word 2007: Click on the Office icon and select "Word Options."
Word 2010/2013/2016/2019: Click on the File ribbon and select "Options." - Click on "Trust Center."
- Click "Trust Center Settings."
- Click "Add-ins."
- Uncheck "Disable all Application Add-ins (may impair functionality)" and click OK.
- Click OK.
- Exit Word and then re-open it.
If you still do not see the tools or you are getting an error message, make sure you have updated EndNote with the latest updates. The directions for installing the updates can be found here .
Once the patch has been installed, reboot your machine and do the following to configure EndNote X7 or later:
1. Browse to the EndNote Program Files folder:
64-bit Machines: C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X7\
C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X8\
C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X9\
C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote 20\
32-bit Machines:C:\Program Files\EndNote X7\
C:\Program Files\EndNote X8\
C:\Program Files\EndNote X9\
C:\Program Files\EndNote 20\
2. Run the "Configure EndNote.exe" utility.
3. Make sure "Configure EndNote components" is selected and click Next.
4. Select Cite While You Write add-in for Microsoft Office and click Next.
5. Click Finish.
Note: The message may read that the Configuration was cancelled.
6. Open Microsoft Word and look for the EndNote X7/X8/X9/20 tools in the ribbon.
If you still do not see the tools or you are getting an error message and have either Word 2002 (XP) or Word 2003, you may try the following:
- Open Word 2002 (XP) or Word 2003, and go to the help menu, and run "Detect and Repair".
- Check the "Discard my settings and restore default settings" button, and click ok.
- Restart your computer and Click the Start menu > Programs (or All Programs) > EndNote > Configure EndNote. Install the Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools again.
- First open your EndNote library then open Word and try the tools.
